Children's Privacy Notice

This Children’s Privacy Notice supplements our Privacy Notice and applies to our processing of personal information that we knowingly collect from a user who is a child under the age of 13 (each a “Child” or “Children”). We refer to this personal information as “Children’s Personal Information”.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) requires that we obtain verifiable parental consent before we collect, use, or disclose personal information from a Child under the age of 13.

​

We request, via digital consent during the registration process, that you represent that you are the parent of any Child for whom you create a profile, and that you consent to our collection, use, and disclosure of Children’s Personal Information in accordance with this Children’s Privacy Notice.

If a school or school district has contracted with Curioso to provide the Services to students at its school who under the age of 13, Curioso relies on the school and/or school district to provide consent on behalf of each parent.

This Children’s Privacy Notice informs parents and guardians (“parent,” “parents”, “you” or “your”) of:

  • The types of Children’s Personal Information we collect.

  • How we use Children’s Personal Information.

  • Our practices for disclosing Children’s Personal Information.

  • Our practices for notifying and obtaining verifiable parental consent that is required under COPPA when we collect Children’s Personal Information, including how parents may revoke that consent.

If you are a Parent with a child who is between the ages of 13 – 14, or a user of the Services who is between the ages of 13 – 14, you can also review Sections 1 – 3 of this Children’s Privacy Notice to understand the types of personal information we collect, how we use the personal information, and our practices for disclosing personal information. In this case, the term “Child” would include an individual who is 13 or 14 years old, and the term “Children’s Personal Information” would include personal information about an individual who is 13 or 14 years old.

1. Children’s Personal Information We Collect

Children’s Personal Information Collected Directly

​

You can create a user profile for your Child when you register on our Services. When you create a profile on behalf of your Child, we collect your Child’s profile name (we do not require the Child’s real name), reading level, reading interests and information about your Child’s age and grade level in school.

Automatic Collection of Children’s Personal Information

​

When a Child uses the Services, we may automatically collect Children’s Personal Information about their use of the Services. For example, we may collect how many books your Child has read, the length of time to complete a book, topics or titles searched for, progress a Child has made via the Services, badges a Child has earned, and the Child’s reading abilities or interests. We may also automatically collect Children’s Personal Information, such as analytics about a Child’s use of the Services, pages that a Child visits using the Services, information about the links a Child clicks, the frequency and duration of a Child’s activities, and other information about how a Child uses our Services.

We may also collect certain Children’s Personal Information automatically when a Child uses the Services, such as Internet protocol (IP) address, browser or device information, Internet service provider, and other similar information.

2. How We Use Children’s Personal Information

​

We use Children’s Personal Information to provide the Services and for the following purposes:

  • Measuring the Child’s performance in activities;

  • Adapting the learning experience to the Child’s needs;

  • Assessing the Child’s progress and provide reports to parents on the Child’s performance on activities; and

  • Recommend related books or media to the Child.

We may also use Children’s Personal Information for the provision of the Services to your Child as described in further detail in the following sections of the Privacy Notice: “How We Use Personal Information > Provide the Services” and “How We Use Personal Information > Administrative Purposes”.

3. Disclosure of Children’s Personal Information

We may disclose Children’s Personal Information to third parties for the following reasons:

​

  • With vendors, consultants, service providers and other unaffiliated third parties that provide certain services on our behalf;

  • To the Child’s parent as part of the standard functionality of the Services;

  • If the Child’s account is managed via their school and/or school district, to the Child’s school and/or school district as part of the standard functionality of the Services;

  • With your consent;

  • We may sell or purchase assets. If another entity acquires us or our assets, Children’s Personal Information collected through the Services may be disclosed to such entity as one of the transferred assets. Also, if any bankruptcy or reorganization proceeding is brought by or against us, all such information may be considered an asset of ours and as such may be sold or transferred to third parties; and

  • We may transfer Children’s Personal Information to third parties to comply with a legal obligation; when we believe in good faith that the law requires it; at the request of governmental authorities conducting an investigation; to verify or enforce our Terms of Service or other applicable policies; to respond to an emergency; or otherwise to protect the rights, property, safety or security of third parties, users of the Services or the public.

  • We may also disclose to third parties de-identified and/or aggregated information that does not reasonably identify any Child.

4. Parental Rights and Controls

You choose whether to permit us to collect Children’s Personal Information from your Child. If you have not given us permission to collect Children’s Personal Information, we will not collect it. We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose Children’s Personal Information without the parents’ permission.

As a parent, you have the following controls over Children’s Personal Information. At any time, you may:

  • review Children’s Personal Information that we maintain;

  • request that we correct or delete Children’s Personal Information; and

  • refuse to permit us to further collect or use Children’s Personal Information.

You may do so by sending us an email at info@veritasacademy.us. We may require you to take certain steps or provide additional information to verify your identity before we provide any information or make corrections.

Please note that if you refuse to permit us to further collect or use Children’s Personal Information, or if you request deletion of Children’s Personal Information, we may terminate our Services we provide to the Child.

If you request that we delete Children’s Personal Information, we will delete as much information as we are legally permitted. Due to regulatory record keeping obligations, we may be required by law to retain some information associated with a closed account.

5. Retention of Children’s Personal Information

We retain the Children’s Personal Information we collect as described in this Children’s Privacy Notice for as long as your Child uses the Services, for up to two years following account cancellation, or as necessary to fulfill the purpose(s) for which it was collected.

6. Methods for Providing Verifiable Parental Consent

A parent may provide consent for a Child to use the Services by providing their payment card information to us and authorizing us to charge such payment method.

If a school or school district has contracted with Veritas to provide the Services to students at its school who under the age of 13, Veritas relies on the school and/or school district to provide consent on behalf of each parent.
